{"id":39303,"date":"2025-03-27T09:08:54","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T09:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ppnewsline.in\/?p=39303"},"modified":"2025-03-27T09:08:54","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T09:08:54","slug":"delhi-high-court-seeks-police-response-on-sharjeel-imams-plea-in-2019-jamia-violence-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ppnewsline.in\/?p=39303","title":{"rendered":"Delhi High Court Seeks Police Response on Sharjeel Imam\u2019s Plea in 2019 Jamia Violence Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"49\" data-end=\"266\">The <strong data-start=\"53\" data-end=\"73\">Delhi High Court<\/strong> on Thursday sought the response of the city police on a plea by activist <strong data-start=\"147\" data-end=\"164\">Sharjeel Imam<\/strong> challenging a trial court\u2019s order to frame charges against him in the <strong data-start=\"235\" data-end=\"263\">2019 Jamia violence case<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"268\" data-end=\"527\">Justice <strong data-start=\"276\" data-end=\"294\">Sanjeev Narula<\/strong> also refused to stay the trial court proceedings in the case at this stage. The court issued a notice to the police on the main petition as well as on the stay application and listed the matter for further hearing on <strong data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"524\">April 24<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"768\">Imam has challenged the trial court\u2019s <strong data-start=\"567\" data-end=\"578\">March 7<\/strong> order, in which it stated that he was not only an <strong data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"643\">instigator<\/strong> but also one of the <strong data-start=\"664\" data-end=\"720\">\u201ckingpins of a larger conspiracy to incite violence\u201d<\/strong> and had ordered to frame charges against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"973\">The trial court observed that Imam\u2019s <strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"828\">December 13, 2019<\/strong> speech near <strong data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"876\">Jamia Millia Islamia University<\/strong> was <strong data-start=\"881\" data-end=\"895\">\u201cvenomous\u201d<\/strong>, \u201cpitted one religion against another,\u201d and was <strong data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"970\">\u201cindeed a hate speech\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1268\">The case is being heard against Imam and others, who were booked at <strong data-start=\"1043\" data-end=\"1080\">New Friends Colony Police Station<\/strong> under various provisions of the <strong data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1120\">IPC<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1180\">Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP)<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1202\">Arms Act<\/strong>. The <strong data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1237\">Delhi Police Crime Branch<\/strong> is investigating the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1270\" data-end=\"1551\">Additionally, the trial court ordered framing of charges under various IPC and <strong data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1361\">PDPP Act<\/strong> provisions against <strong data-start=\"1381\" data-end=\"1423\">Anal Hussain, Anwar, Yunus, and Jumman<\/strong>, stating that police witness testimony and their mobile phone records established their participation in the <strong data-start=\"1533\" data-end=\"1548\">riotous mob<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1553\" data-end=\"1756\">The case stems from the <strong data-start=\"1577\" data-end=\"1599\">2019-2020 protests<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1627\">Jamia Millia Islamia<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1648\">Shaheen Bagh<\/strong>, following the passage of the <strong data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1714\">Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1753\">Parliament on December 11, 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the response of the city police on a plea by activist Sharjeel Imam challenging a trial court\u2019s order to frame charges against him in the 2019 Jamia violence case.
