SRINAGAR, Sep 26 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that the arrest of activist Sonam Wangchuk in Leh is unfortunate. Sonam Wangchuk was arrested today two days after violent protests in the Leh city, in which four people died and several others injured.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Ministersaid it was unfortunate that Wangchuk has been arrested, but the way the Centre has been targeting him over the past few days made it seem inevitable.<\/p>\n

He also said that the Centre had made promises to the people of Jammu & Kashmir but failed to fulfill them. \u201cI don\u2019t know what compulsion the Centre has that it keeps making promises but never fulfill them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said that the people of Ladakh had decided to boycott the elections, but after Union Minister\u2019s visit and fresh assurances, they not only participated in the polls but also helped the BJP win.<\/p>\n

When asked about Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma\u2019s allegation that the Chief Minister was justifying violence, CM Omar said there was no justification for it. \u201cThere is no reason to justify violence, but it has become a habit of the LoP to shift blame. He should answer why this situation has arisen. I am neither Ladakh\u2019s LG nor do I control the security apparatus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

CM Omar also questioned the delay in restoring statehood to Jammu & Kashmir. \u201cWhy hasn\u2019t statehood been restored? Is it because the LoP is not the Chief Minister? If that\u2019s the condition, then they should tell the court clearly that statehood will not be restored until the BJP is out of power. But we won\u2019t let them come to power. Even if they delay statehood restoration, we will continue to run the government in the current setup,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) today demanded an impartial probe into the clashes between protesters and security personnel in Leh town of Ladakh and asked the UT administration to stop \u201cwitch hunting\u201d and \u201charassment\u201d of people.<\/p>\n

It also defended climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was blamed by Government for making \u201cprovocative statements\u201d leading to mob violence, and expressed sympathies with the families of four slain protesters, describing them as \u201cheroes of Ladakh\u201d.<\/p>\n

Instead of handling the situation in a proper manner, the administration used excessive force on the unarmed protesters\u2026we want a thorough probe into the violence and legal action against those who ordered the firing,\u201d co-chairman of KDA Asgar Ali Karbalai told reporters in Kargil.<\/p>\n

Karbalai, who was flanked by other senior members of the KDA including Ladakh MP Hanifa Jan said whatever happened was unfortunate but the way the Government handled the situation was like \u201crubbing salt into our wounds\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jan said the people of Ladakh felt ignored after the MHA failed to convene next round of talks.\u201cThe Government must stop harassment of youth, hold free and fair investigation and restart dialogue with all seriousness to resolve pending demands,\u201d he said. Kargil observed a shutdown in support of the demands.<\/p>\n
