Jammu, June 15: BJP spokesperson and Convenor, International Affairs, Gaurav Gupta today launched a scathing attack on senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over his controversial statement that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi would have banned the BJP had she been alive today. Terming Gehlot’s remarks as “deeply disturbing, anti-democratic and reflective of Congress’s authoritarian DNA,” Gaurav Gupta said the statement has once again exposed the Congress party’s intolerance towards political opponents and its continued obsession with the Emergency-era mindset. “It is shocking that a senior Congress leader is openly advocating the banning of the world’s largest political party. Such statements reveal that Congress has learned nothing from the dark chapter of the Emergency when democracy was crushed, opposition leaders were jailed and fundamental rights were suspended. Ashok Gehlot’s statement is not merely an attack on BJP; it is an attack on the democratic spirit of India,” Gupta said. He said Gehlot’s reference to Indira Gandhi was particularly significant because it reminded the nation of the 1975 Emergency, during which thousands of opposition leaders, journalists, students and activists were imprisoned while press freedom was strangled. “Congress leaders continue to glorify a period when democracy was virtually suspended. The fact that Ashok Gehlot believes banning political opponents is an acceptable idea shows that the Emergency mindset is still alive within the Congress party,” he remarked. Taking strong exception to Gehlot’s criticism of Hindutva, Gaurav Gupta said Congress’s repeated attacks on Hindu beliefs and cultural identity have become a pattern. He noted that the Supreme Court has described Hindutva as a way of life and not merely a political ideology. “Congress has once again exposed its deep-rooted discomfort with Hindu identity and India’s civilizational ethos. Time and again, Congress leaders have targeted Hindu traditions, questioned the faith of the majority community and indulged in divisive vote-bank politics. Gehlot’s remarks are yet another example of this dangerous mindset,” Gupta said. The BJP spokesperson further stated that Congress leaders become uncomfortable whenever BJP speaks about cultural heritage, national pride or civilizational values because such issues expose decades of appeasement politics practiced by the Congress party. “Congress cannot digest the fact that the people of India have repeatedly rejected its politics of appeasement and corruption. Since it cannot defeat BJP politically, some of its leaders now openly speak the language of bans and suppression. This reveals their frustration and desperation,” he added. Gaurav Gupta said that BJP’s growth and popularity are the result of public trust, good governance, nationalism and development-oriented politics. He asserted that no amount of political hostility from Congress can weaken the democratic mandate repeatedly given by the people of India. “India is a democracy, not a one-party state. The BJP believes in democratic competition, public accountability and constitutional values. Congress, on the other hand, continues to display authoritarian tendencies whenever it faces political setbacks. Ashok Gehlot’s statement has exposed the true face of Congress before the nation,” Gupta said. He urged Congress leadership to clarify whether it endorses Gehlot’s remarks and whether it still believes in the Emergency-era philosophy of silencing political opponents rather than defeating them through democratic means. “The people of India have decisively rejected the politics of appeasement, intolerance and authoritarianism. Congress should introspect instead of dreaming about banning its political rivals.
