INS Arighat: A Strategic Asset for the Indian Navy

The commissioning of INS Arighat, India’s latest nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), marks a significant milestone in the country’s maritime defense capabilities. As the second SSBN to join the Indian Navy, following INS Arihant, INS Arighat is not just a symbol of India’s growing technological prowess, but also a crucial asset in strengthening the nation’s strategic deterrence and enhancing its naval presence in increasingly contested waters.

The importance of INS Arighat lies in its ability to serve as a formidable second-strike platform in India’s nuclear triad. The nuclear triad, which comprises land-based missiles, airborne nuclear capabilities, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), is essential for maintaining a credible and effective deterrent. Among these, SSBNs are particularly critical because of their stealth and survivability. Unlike land-based missile systems that can be vulnerable to pre-emptive strikes, or air-delivered nuclear weapons that rely on airspace control, SSBNs can remain undetected in the vast oceans, ready to retaliate if necessary. This capability ensures that India can maintain a second-strike option even in the face of a nuclear first strike, thereby reinforcing its policy of no first use (NFU).

INS Arighat’s addition to the fleet enhances this deterrence capability. Armed with K-15 SLBMs, which have a range of approximately 750 kilometers, and potentially the longer-range K-4 missiles, the submarine is capable of delivering a devastating response to any adversary. This not only strengthens India’s defense posture but also serves as a stabilizing factor in a region marked by nuclear-armed neighbors and geopolitical tensions.

Beyond its role in nuclear deterrence, INS Arighat also bolsters the Indian Navy’s ability to project power and secure its maritime interests. The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is of immense strategic importance to India, serving as a major conduit for global trade and energy flows. With rising Chinese naval activity in the IOR and the expansion of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) leading to increased presence in the region, the Indian Navy’s role in ensuring the security and stability of these waters has become more critical than ever. INS Arighat, with its advanced stealth capabilities and extended operational range, enhances the Navy’s ability to monitor and counter potential threats, ensuring that India can protect its vital maritime interests.

The development and commissioning of INS Arighat also underscore India’s growing self-reliance in defense technology. The submarine, built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project, reflects decades of research, development, and collaboration within India’s defense establishment. This achievement is a testament to the capabilities of Indian scientists, engineers, and defense personnel, who have overcome significant challenges to deliver a platform that meets the rigorous demands of modern naval warfare.

However, the commissioning of INS Arighat is not without its challenges. Operating and maintaining nuclear submarines requires a high level of technical expertise, rigorous training, and adherence to strict safety protocols. As India continues to expand its SSBN fleet, it will be crucial to ensure that the necessary infrastructure, including submarine bases, maintenance facilities, and training programs, is developed and sustained. Moreover, the strategic nature of SSBNs means that their deployment and operations must be carefully managed to avoid escalating tensions in the region.

In conclusion, INS Arighat is a significant asset for the Indian Navy, enhancing both its strategic deterrence capabilities and its ability to safeguard India’s maritime interests. As India continues to navigate a complex and evolving security environment, the addition of INS Arighat to its fleet represents a crucial step in ensuring that the nation is well-equipped to defend its sovereignty and uphold regional stability. This development not only strengthens India’s defense posture but also highlights its growing role as a major maritime power in the Indo-Pacific region.
