India’s Role in Global Economy Merits G7 Seat, Says Canadian PM Carney Amid Renewed Ties 

Ottawa/New Delhi – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized that India, as the world’s fifth-largest economy, the most populous nation, and a key player in global supply chains, rightly deserves a seat at the G7 Summit. Carney revealed that he had extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has accepted.During a press briefing, Carney was asked about the change in stance toward India, especially after the earlier Trudeau-led government accused New Delhi of being involved in “a campaign of murder and intimidation” following the killing of pro-Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023. In response, Carney confirmed that both nations have agreed to resume law enforcement dialogue that would address accountability-related concerns.As the current chair of the G7, Carney underlined that the upcoming summit would focus on pressing issues such as energy security, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and infrastructure development in emerging economies. He stressed that nations like India, central to many global supply chains, must be part of such key discussions.According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders discussed their longstanding bilateral relations, including people-to-people ties and trade. They also agreed to continue cooperation on security matters. The invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, marks a significant step forward in repairing diplomatic relations strained under Trudeau’s leadership.Prime Minister Modi, in a social media post, expressed optimism about working together with Canada on the basis of mutual respect and shared goals, and stated he was looking forward to the summit.While Modi’s invitation drew criticism from the World Sikh Organization, which labeled it a “betrayal,” Canadian business leaders welcomed the move. Goldy Hyder, President of the Business Council of Canada, called the invitation a timely opportunity to reset bilateral relations.Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand recently noted that the country aims to rebuild ties with India gradually, while also seeking to diversify trade beyond the United States.The G7 includes Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. Leaders from the European Union and other invited countries are also expected to attend the 2025 summit.
