BJP Nominates Kanad Purkayastha for Rajya Sabha from Assam, Alliance with AGP Remains Strong

Guwahati – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday announced Kanad Purkayastha, the party’s Assam state secretary, as its candidate for one of the two upcoming Rajya Sabha seats from the state. His nomination was cleared by the party’s Central Election Committee, as per an official release.Purkayastha, who hails from the Barak Valley, comes from a prominent political family in Assam. He is the son of Kabindra Purkayastha, a senior BJP leader and former Union minister who played a key role in building the party’s presence in the state during the 1990s and early 2000s.This move aligns with the BJP’s ongoing seat-sharing arrangement with its regional ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). Of the two Rajya Sabha seats that are set to become vacant, one was previously held by the BJP and the other by the AGP. The alliance partners have decided to retain one seat each. The elections and counting of votes for these two Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled for June 19. Given the BJP-led alliance’s majority in the Assam Legislative Assembly, both Purkayastha and the yet-to-be-declared AGP candidate are expected to secure their seats without difficulty.
