Extreme rainfall events in August have taken a toll in parts of the Jammu region of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In the monsoon-related tragedy in Jammu and Kashmir, more than 200 people were either killed or swept away by flash floods and buried under rocks in Jammu regions as the region recorded its highest-ever rainfall in the Month of August. The calamity should be a lesson for authorities to protect mountains and forests. More importantly, the Centre and J&K governments in the Jammu and Kashmir, and research institutions should come together to create warning mechanisms that alert people to weather vagaries. The constant reworking of rocks in the J&K mountain chain aggravates the fragility of the Himalaya, and increases the vulnerabilities of the people who live in this region. Data reveals, J&K was among the more landslide-prone regions of the country, with 12 per cent of its “mapped hilly area falling under the highly-susceptible category”. The Geological Survey of India has completed landslide susceptibility mapping of the Himalayan region. Much of this information is available on the GSI’s portals. It’s now up to planners, governments, and disaster management authorities to use this information in their climate adaptation programmes. Priority should be given to monitoring the most vulnerable zones with a dense population or large traffic movement regions hit in the last two days, for example and a large built-up area. It is, however, also correct that Cloud burst and flash floods cannot be predicted with pinpoint accuracy. For instance, it’s now apparent that the disaster in Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur, Mata Vaishno Devi in the month of August was not preceded by heavier-than-usual rainfall. The impact of climate change on Western Disturbances has been noticeable for at least a decade. The low-pressure system originates in the Mediterranean Sea and typically moves eastward across Central Asia and northern India during the winter and spring seasons. However, it has begun to occur with increasing frequency lately during the summer and monsoon seasons. Its presence during the Monsoon often leads to extreme rainfall, flash floods, and landslides in the Jammu and Kashmir. There have been at least 24 such disturbances in the current monsoon season. The time has come for policymakers, engineers, and civil society to rally around a comprehensive flood management strategy. The devastating floods of August 2025 were expected to serve as a turning point for Jammu region. Thousands of homes were submerged, lives were lost, and the economic toll was staggering. Yet, a decade later, our vulnerability remains largely unchanged. The recent floods, triggered by just two days of incessant rainfall, have exposed the fragility of eight districts of Jammu region. Instead of learning from the past 2014 , we find ourselves trapped in a cycle of unpreparedness, with no comprehensive policy in place to mitigate the impact of floods or reduce their likelihood. Flooding in Jammu continues to cause immense worry and distress among the people. Agricultural fields are ravaged, houses damaged, and families displaced to rehabilitation centers. The destruction of paddy, fruits, and vegetables threatens food security, making Jammu increasingly dependent on the rest of the country for staple supplies. The aftermath also brings waterlogging, waterborne diseases, and long-lasting psychological trauma. If we are serious about protecting Jammu and Kashmir from future floods, piecemeal measures will not suffice. A bold, large-scale intervention is the need of the hour. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has not listen to words of adise from the experts and media continue with tits unplanned expension of Highways, Ring Roads, Fly overs and bridges in the Jammu region. One viable long-term solution is the construction of Highways network, Fly overs and Bridges should be stopped henceforth to save Jammu and Kashmir from further disaster.
