The J&K Bureaucracy gave major blow to the sports persons of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir by eroding the Autonomous status of the J&K Sports Council. Since many decades J&K bureaucracy is eyeing on it but got this chance when centre govt managed to demote J&K state to UT. Thereafter, the bureaucracy took over the complete control of the administration of J&K UT. They have changed its constitution according to their own will and wish. On many occasion, appointment of bureaucrat as head of the J&K Sports Council proved disaster for the sports persons, no governance, corruption jumped four time high in Jammu and Kashmir after 2019. Now the sportspersons have lot of hope on the newly elected govt headed by Chief minister Omar Abdullah , who himself is golfer and athlete, Skier that autonomy of J&K Sports Council be restored, fulfill shortage of staff and issue appointment to the outstanding sportspersons in it. Sports Council has given a lot to Jammu and Kashmir, far beyond expectations, despite difficulties, financial constraints, outdated equipment, and staff shortages. Sports Council authorities is feeling immense pressure due to inadequate staff at districts . its autonomy, once a hallmark of its efficient functioning, has been eroded by the administration in 2019 and nominated senior bureaucrats as its official members and few self style sports promoters as non official members . The autonomy of Sports Council has also been compromised, affecting its functioning .Citing critical challenges like nexus between Sports Council officials and Sports Bodies office bearers, non adherence of Sports Code and Sports Council’s guidelines by the sports associations will be the biggest issue for the new sports minister of J&K. J&K Sports minister must immediate take action to restore the institution’s operational independence. Sports Council represents a beacon of hope for the Sports persons of Jammu and Kashmir. Govt has constructed the indoor stadium at every district of the J&K but there is no one to look after it. Newly elected govt headed by Omar Abdullah should change its bureaucrats friendly constitution and nominate members to those who are genuine Sports Journalists, International players, However, there is no need to nominate members from the Sports Bodies. On one hand it regulates the activities of recognised State Sports Associations funding their operations. On the other hand, it also advises the government in sports related matters, recommending and formulating policies for encouragement and nurturing of sport in the state.
